CHRISTMAS SHOEBOX APPEAL

Mayo Abbey Training Centre & Abbey Tots are working with Team Hope in organising a Christmas Shoebox Appeal. You can donate items to one of the collection points in the Church, the Resource Centre or in Abbey Tots. A shoebox won’t change everything, but it will do far more than we could ever imagine, by bringing Christmas to children who have never experienced anything like it before. Your shoebox will bring a little hope, a lot of laughter and smiles for children who have very little. Suggestions for what can be put in the shoeboxes include pens, pencils, colouring books, toothbrushes, hairbrushes, a small item or clothing and a surprise or treat. Don’t forget the biggest gift of all to young children is a little toy. The countries Christmas Shoeboxes are delivered to are Eastern Europe and former Soviet Union: Romania, Kosovo, Moldova, Ukraine, and Albania. Africa: Burundi, Congo, Lesotho, Swaziland, Rwanda. The most important criteria is if you wouldn’t give it to your child then don’t send it to some other body’s child.

COLUMBAN PILGRIMAGE WALK TO CROAGH PATRICK

The annual Columban Pilgrimage Walk to Croagh Patrick takes place again this year. The walk starts in Knock after lunch on Thursday 24th July and over the next 3 days the pilgrims pass through Mayo Abbey, Belcarra, Ballintubber and Liscarney before climbing Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday 27th July. The Columban Pilgrimage Walk was started almost 20 years ago by Fr Tommy Murphy S.S.C. whose father was a native of Facefield. Each year a group of regulars are joined by newcomers both from Ireland and overseas. They have experienced all types of our varied summer weather, from arriving here on Thursday evening cold and wet or exhausted after a day of glorious sunshine.

The organisers are very grateful to the local communities who provide food and accommodation for the weary pilgrims. In Mayo Abbey they are accommodated overnight in Mayo Gaels GAA clubhouse with the evening meal and breakfast provided in the Bishop O'Healy Resource centre. As well as a very warm welcome they hear about what has been happening in the community since the last meeting and new pilgrims learn of the history of the area. It is that connection with the locality and the people that the Columban Missionaries and their friends and supporters look forward to each year as well as enjoying and savouring the beauty and tranquillity of the Mayo countryside. When contacted this week the pilgrimage organiser Claire Carey commented "We hope that the Columban Pilgrimage Walk and our connection with Mayo and the local communities continues into the future". Claire can be contacted on info@columban.com or 087-2187002. Why not join them for one day or longer and say that you walked the Columban Pilgrimage Walk to Croagh Patrick.

Local Notes 12th January 2014

A GAME OF OLD-STYLE FOOTBALL

The Mayo Gaels homecoming celebration on Stephens’s day brought current and former Mayo Gaels players, their partners, family and friends together. The game between a Mayo Gaels ‘home’ team and ‘exiles’ selection saw some players of bygone days making a name for themselves by their standard of fitness. The game resembled the game of 100 years ago with about 20 players on each team. The wet and stormy conditions appeared to inspire the spirits in an eagerly contested match which ended in a draw.
The traditional end of year draws took place and the winners were; 2013 Three-Number-Bonus-Draw.
