Course Description

This Course is designed to:

Distinguish between different ways of working:
Identify the features of five different ways of working, e.g. paid employment, self-employment, voluntary work, work in the home, work on a scheme

Carry out a survey about different types of work and working life:
Collect information from at least four local people, using a supplied questionnaire, to find out about:
Different types of work people do
Personal characteristics needed for different types of work
Whether or not the subjects of the survey like their work and why?
Reasons why people work

Identify some ideal qualities of employers and employees:

  • List five qualities which describe an ideal employer and ideal employee


Identify possible sources of work in the locality:

  • Compile a list of potential job opportunities in the area
  • Indicate what type of work may be available: paid, voluntary, part time, full time, etc.
  • Indentify any personal contacts with these job opportunities


Determine his/her own personal strengths and weaknesses which are relevant to working life:

  • Outline own talents, interests, personal qualities, values and any work related experience


Identify possible careers that would suit his/her own skills, qualities and interests:

  • Suggest three areas of employment which link to own characteristics
  • Compile a list of jobs which match own skills, qualities and interests


Make an application, real or simulated, for a job suitable to his/her own interests and capabilities:

  • Write a letter of application, using correct format, grammar and spelling
  • Enclose a CV


Take part in a simulated interview for a chosen job:

  • Prepare answers for six typical interview questions
  • Prepare one or two questions to ask interviewers
  • Decide on appropriate dress
  • Take part in a simulated interview
  • Evaluate performance with the help of feedback


Candidates must present a portfolio of coursework which shows that they have achieved all of the specific learning outcomes. The portfolio must contain:
